New Dog Parent Checklist: Before Bringing Your Dog Home

Bringing home a new dog is such an exciting and rewarding experience. Whether you’re welcoming a playful pup or a grown companion, preparing ahead of time can make all the difference. From must-have supplies to safety tips and routine planning, this checklist is designed to help you create a smooth, stress-free transition and start your life together on the right paw.


🏡 Home Prep

  •  Designate a safe, quiet space for your dog to settle in

  •  Secure trash cans, electrical cords, and household hazards

  •  Remove toxic plants, foods, and chemicals from reach

  •  Install baby gates or barriers if limiting access to certain areas

  •  Decide on house rules (e.g., couch access, sleeping arrangements)


🛒 Supplies to Have Ready

  •  Food and water bowls (preferably stainless steel or ceramic)

  •  High-quality dog food (ask what they are currently eating)

  •  Collar with ID tag (engraved with name + phone number)

  •  Leash and harness

  •  Crate (sized appropriately for sleeping and safe confinement)

  •  Dog bed and cozy blankets

  •  Toys: chew toys, squeaky toys, puzzle feeders

  •  Grooming tools: brush, dog shampoo, nail clippers

  •  Dog-safe cleaning supplies (accidents will happen!)

  •  Poop bags and a designated potty area
